Frigotherm represents Funke Heat Exchangers Germany in South Africa, which permits us to supply any type of plate heat exchangers. Computerized selection, design and costing software enable us to respond very quickly to clients’ enquiries.

We keep a large assortment of plates in stock and can deliver nation-wide within short periods. Other standard product types such as shell and tubes and air blast oil coolers are held in semi stock and are assembled to individual requirements and despatched within 3-4 working days.

The FPS consists of a package of embossed heat transfer plates.

Funke Plate Heat Exchangers

Each plate is provided with a gasket, which seals the flow gaps to atmosphere and the media from one another. The plate package is mounted in a rack consisting of a fixed number of plates. Two pressure plates clamp this package together with tie rods. Single pass and multi-pass arrangements are standard with a surface area of up 1500m2 in one unit. Pure counter flow is employed to achieve maximum possible heat transfer.

All plates are provided with a double gasket at inlet and outlet, which prevents mixing of media. A leak indication hole in the gasket signals leakage to atmosphere.

The major advantage of bolted type heat exchanger is its ability to expand or reduce surface area according to varying heat load conditions. For example, should a design specification dictate a too small FPS selection the problem can be rectified on site with minimal down times - simply by adding a proportionate amount of plates at marginal cost.

In the event of plate fouling the FPS is fully serviceable and PHE can be readily dismantled for cleaning without disturbance of interconnecting piping.

Material of plates St.St.G316, St.St.G304Alternative material for special applications is available on request. Material gaskets include NBR, EPDM and VITON. Port connections can be supplied to client requirements. Standard connections include threaded socket or nipple, metal lining and flanged connections.

TPL, GPL Series - Brazed Type Plate Heat Exchangers (BHE)

Individual plates are brazed together rather than bolted. The added advantage is a smaller overall sizing and lower cost due to a higher achieved ratio of heat load to mass. These types of plate heat exchangers do not use gaskets and undergo a strict quality inspection programme, including pressure and leak-tests to ensure absolute leak tightness.

The heat-exchanging surface of these units is between 0.02 and 150m2. BHE’s are particularly well suited for refrigeration applications, but are equally well suitable for other applications such as oil, air and water cooling/heating, and evaporation/condensation. Given optimal operating conditions the BHE is practically maintenance free.

The BHE consists of embossed stainless steel plates, fitted into one another and vacuum brazed with copper or nickel solders to form a compact and pressure-tight unit.

During assembly every second unit is rotated 180 degrees to form two separate flow gaps that act as turbulators ensuring a highly turbulent flow which enables the most effective heat transfer and reduces the risk of fouling to a minimum.

Plate Heat Exchangers

Heat insulation provided optionally; Die cast PU-Foam with a long-term thermal stability up to 135°C. Normally consisting of two halves, fastened to the Heat exchanger with straps or tensions bolts.

The TPL Series utilizes additional turbulator plates in the flow gaps and increased flow gaps compared to other plate types.

The TPL is particularly well suited to flow media with average to high viscosity.

GPL Series - Brazed Type Plate Heat Exchanger:

THE GPL series utilizes V-corrugation for universal application for use in case of flow media with low viscosity.

The NPL, GPLS and SPL series are variants of the GPL using nickel solder (resistant to ammonia, demineralised water and synthetic oils) rather than copper. The GPLS has double plates for added safety whereas the SPL has two separate flow gaps. These safety BHE’s are used where cross contamination is not acceptable.

All connections are standard BSP port sockets, for higher volume flows flanges are used.
